How You Discipline Your Child Matters

What is your Discipline Style

Discipline is important when it comes to raising our kids and simply cannot be ignored if you hope to bring up kids who will fit into society.

However, disciplining your child can be very daunting on the other hand. It can make the sleepless nights when the baby was just an infant seem inviting! Remember, the guiding principle behind discipline is to teach your children and not to punish them.

Just as with all other aspects of parenting, disciplining children is not always cut and paste. Each parent has their own discipline style. Here are some of the common ones:

The Authoritarian Style:

A.k.a the “because I said so” style. This style assumes that the child needs to be controlled by being given orders which should be followed without question. Parents who use this style are very strict and expect to be obeyed without question. The children are rarely involved in problem-solving.

“To bring up a child in the way he should go, travel that way yourself once in a while” Josh Billings

The Permissive Style:

A.k.a the “kids will be kids” style. Parents who assume this style want their children to be their friends making it difficult to punish them and end up pushing them away as a result. Such parents don’t want to hurt their kids’ feelings. The parents will only step in when the situation is extremely serious.

The Democratic Style:

Parents who employ this type of discipline style feel that their children are equal to them as human beings. They treat them with respect and listen to their opinions even if they may not necessarily agree with them. The parents will focus more on consequences and solutions than punishment. This done by setting limits, providing choices within those limits, and employing kind but firm discipline.

Remember: “The best bought-up children are those who have seen their parents as they are. Hypocrisy is not the first duty of a parent.” George B. Shaw
