Breast milk : The Wonder Drug

Martin says, ‘breast milk is like cocaine. Look how Kendi acts every time she drinks it. She gets high!’ And that’s true. She throws her hands up in the air after every feed, and yells and shouts with a big smile on her face. She surely looks drunk or high on drugs.

You see, breast milk is a super food. According to, a website that I’m an avid follower of, breast milk contains water, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals, amino acids, enzymes and white cells.

Let me break that down in English. Breast milk is all your baby needs.

Some people think that babies need drinking water (breast milk contains water). Others think babies need porridge (breast milk contains carbohydrates and vitamins). That they will get hungry and/or thirsty without other food. I once had a nanny who shared with me how her mother fed her 2 month old porridge. When she came back and asked why, her mother said she didn’t want the baby to starve. ‘Breast milk is not enough to satisfy a baby’ she added confidently. I felt sad.

Well you are probably wondering :breast milk how long? Well hospitals insist on exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of a baby’s life. Are they just out to tire the mother? Or maybe to starve the baby? The mums post baby diet makes breast milk is a super food.

Every time, I took Kendi to the clinic and her weight kept going up, the nurses and doctors would ask me 3 or 4 times if I was breast feeding exclusively. Kendi was so heavy that they were sure I was feeding her something else. I assured them each time that it was only breast milk. And thank God for that- Some women have breast feeding problems and are unable to produce it. That’s where it gets heartbreaking.

Kendi is healthy and fighting diseases like a boss (she has only had 2 colds in her 9 months of life) because of the breast milk. It helped her fight this big bad world and its big bad things!
