The way you breathe can help you calm down and re-connect with your body in a simple and healthy way. This can be especially useful when upset. Try this:
- Breathe in deeply through your nose as you count to two (in your mind).
- Hold your breath for one-second.
- Breathe out slowly through your mouth for four-seconds.
- Repeat three times. (Stop if you feel dizzy).
- Try again the next day or the next time you’re stressed.
Once you get used to it, you can add the time, remembering to exhale a few seconds longer than you inhale. You can try and inhale for three-seconds, then four and slowly up to ten with practice.
Your thoughts can change the way you see the world, and yourself. Try repeating one of your favourite saying(s) five times every morning and night for a month, and see the difference.
- I love myself for who I am.
- I listen to my heart.
- I am filled with kindness and power.
- I believe in my dreams.
Actively building positive thinking in your life can help you feel better, grow more and become the person you want to be.
When worried or stressed out, it is easy to feel that you are alone, or that you deserve to be alone. Your connections to friends, family and those who love you will help guide you through the tough times.
- Stay connected to those who love you.
- Ask for help when you need it.
- Be there for those who need you.
Remember, the connections you make (to yourself and those around you) will give you someone to rely on if or when you need support.
If someone in your life is struggling, it can seem almost impossible to help or support them. The simplest, and one of the greatest ways you can help, is by simply listening. To listen well you should:
- Let them speak. It’s not about you so it is best to let them lead the way.
- Not offer solutions or ideas unless they ask for it. Sometimes, a person knows what they should do, but they just need to talk it out.
- Not be judgmental; whether or not you agree with their choices, it is their choice to make.
Listening is a powerful gift. By offering your shoulder to cry on, you have the power to make a difference.
